“What’s in a name?”

This iconic phrase from William Shakespeare has been through time immemorial. However, if Wasted Potential are to be believed, it is to automatically stand out from the rest of their competitors well before the season, and safe to say they have done exactly that with this wacky and ingenious name.

When asked about how they came up with the name, Co-owner Aryan Sher said that they did not really give it much thought, that they just found the name funny, and decided to stick with it.

Wasted Potential are a new team in essence, but the owners are a part of the ACES Football League family. Aryan Sher turned up for Satans FC last season, while Manav Gagawani suited up for MRFC. However, this will be Varun Gupta’s first exposure in ACES.

Playing in the league last season, both Aryan and Manav managed to take valuable lessons from the teams that they plied their trade for. While both their teams had underwhelming seasons, Aryan believes that they have taken enough learnings on board to ensure that they do not make the same mistakes that their previous team owners made.

When asked about what was their most important takeaway as owners, Aryan spoke about how he was taken aback by the high nature of the technical quality that was on display in the league.

“When I played in the ACES Football League last season, it was my first exposure to the league. And I was absolutely awestruck by the technical quality that I seen from other teams. So I, Manav, and Varun decided that we will build a team that has a high technical ceiling. Who we sign, and what position we sign holds a lot of importance.

“We want to build a team that lasts for the entirety of the season in terms of durability. So god forbid if there are any injuries, or we have players not turning up, we have quality backups slotting in, which makes our job as a team much more easier.”

True to their word, Wasted Potential have indeed gone ahead and made up a core of players that raise the side’s technical floor and ceiling. Alongside Aryan, Manav, and Varun, Joshua Narde comes in after having a good season between the sticks for Satans. Jagdish Lobo brings flair and composure in the centre of the park, while Aakash Banerjee will bring in the goals up top.

WP have been pooled in a seemingly tough Pool A that will see them square off against the likes of Trana, Casuals, and Bluelock. Even Youngblood and Cathect will pose stern tests to their technical side. Whether Aryan’s boys manage to hold their own against these sides is something that will pique a lot of people's interest.

Aryan himself is mindful of the fact that the group is indeed a difficult one. “Firstly, let me make it very clear that this is a difficult group. The likes of Trana and Casuals were very very consistent and strong last season, and it will be a test of our mettle.

“However, we believe that we need to focus on our team and take it one game at a time. I believe we have built a good core. If we play our game and do not focus on the outside noise, I believe that we will definitely be in a good place in the business end of the season.”

Wasted Potential are here. They are stacked. They have brought in the right players, and enter the season with positive vibes all around. However, their message to the rest of the League is loud and clear: DON'T be FOOLED by the name. Wasted Potential are here to make waves.
